Constitution Day also known as 'Samvidhan Diwas', is celebrated on 26th November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi made an official declaration on 11 October 2015 while laying the foundation stone of the B.R. Ambedkar's Statue of Equality memorial in Mumbai.
Since, 2015 was the 125th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar who is known as the father of Indian Constitution, the government decided in May 2015 to celebrate this year in a big way. Various departments of the Government of India celebrated the first Indian Constitution Day, as the department of Education and Literacy, the preamble of the constitution was read in all schools by the students.
In addition to the celebration, there were quiz competitions and essay competitions both online and offline on the subject of the Constitution of India. The Ministry of External Affairs directed all overseas Indian schools to celebrate 26 November as Constitution Day and directed embassies to translate the Constitution into the local language.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in Constitution Day celebrations in the Supreme Court today, during the program the Prime Minister will launch various new initiatives under the e - court project.
The Project is an effort to provide services to litigants, lawyers and judiciary through ICT enablement of courts, these initiatives being launched by the Prime Minister include Virtual Justice Clock, Just IS mobile App 2.o, Digital Court and S3Wass Websites.
The Preamble of the Indian Constitution declares the country as sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic and aims to secure justice, liberty, and equality for all the citizens and promote fraternity to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation.
Need for Constitution in a democracy -
1. In a democracy, the Constitution is a sacred text for the Government as it lays a strong foundation for a parliamentary democracy to function.
2. The Constitution is the supreme law of a Nation.
3. India is the largest democracy in the world, and its Constitution serves as a guiding light for it to function smoothly and vibrantly.
4. Ever evolving, the Constitution of India is dynamic and adapts itself to the changing times, to address the changing requirements of a developing nation.
Interesting facts about the Indian Constitution =
1. Sh. Nand Lal Bose, a pioneer of modern Indian Art, designed the borders of every page of the Constitution and adorned it with art pieces.
2. The original manuscript of the Constitution was written on parchment sheets measuring 16 X 22 inches having a lifespan of a thousand years it weighted 3. 75 kgs.
3. The Constitutional Assembly had 299 elected members from provincial Legislative Assemblies.
4. The Constitution of India was adopted in 1949 when 284 members signed it, marking the completion of the Constitution making process.
