In the year 1985, the Government of India declared Swami Vivekananda's birthday as National Youth Day in honor of the great philosopher and monk.
"Man is born to conquer nature and not to follow it" - this particular quote by Swami Vivekananda represents that anyone can achieve anything with a fearless attitude. Swami Vivekananda was born to Narendranath Datta on 12th January, 1863, in Kolkata, West Bengal. Swami Vivekananda practiced meditation from a very early age and also joined the Brahmo Samaj movement. He also introduced various Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga in the western countries.
Swami Vivekananda was a true Karma Yogi and he strongly believed in the youth who has the power to transform the fate of India through their hard work, dedication and spiritual power. His message to the youth was, "What I want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel, inside which dwells a mind of which the thunderbolt is made."
Being a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Parma Hansa, Swami Vivekananda laid the foundation of the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. Every year, the Indian Government chooses a theme for the International Youth the theme for this year is "its all in the mind'', the main aim behind celebrating this day is spreading awareness among the youth regarding Swami Vivekananda's ideals and vision to inspire and encourage them to work towards the development of our country.
This year honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate 25th National Youth Festival through video conferencing in Puducherry, the festival will be held virtually and the inauguration will be followed by a National Youth Summit that will aim to ignite and unite the youth towards nation - building. Several activities including 250 cultural activities, painting competitions, over 800 essay and elocution competitions , 58 blood donation campaigns, and about 165 online Yoga sessions and other activities will be held across the nation starting from 12-19 January.
Swami Vivekananda was a powerful orator and writer in English and Bengali, most of his published works were compiled from lectures given around the world that were mainly delivered impromptu. His main work comprised of Raja Yoga that consisted of the talks which he delivered in New York.
