The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts of mental health.
It was started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health by then Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter, the day is officially commemorated every year on October 10.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, which is observed Union health minister Mankush Mandaviya called for an end of stigma associated with mental illness, urging people to show their support for the cause by wearing a green ribbon to cerate awareness about the issue.
"Positive mental health plays a crucial role in the well being of an individual on World Mental Health Day, let's pledge to end the stigma associated with mental illness. Wear a Green Ribbon to create awareness about mental health. I appeal people in need to come forward and seek help," Mandaviya tweeted.
Importance of Mental Health-
Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well- being it affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps in determining how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices, mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health, depression increases the risk of physical health problems, particularly long - lasting conditions like diabetes, heart diseases and stroke.
Can Your Mental Health Change over time?
Yes, it is important to remember that a person's mental health can change over time, depending on many factors, when the demands are placed on a person exceeds their resources and coping abilities, their mental health could be impacted. For example, if someone is working for long hours, caring for a relative, or experiencing economic hardships, they may experience poor mental health.
How common are mental illness??
1. More than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life.
2. 1 in 5 children either currently or at some point during their life had a seriously deliberating mental illness.
3. Many individuals experience a mental illness given in a year.
4. Many Indians and Americans lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression.
What causes mental illness??
There is no single cause for mental illness a number of factors can contribute to risk for mental illness such as,
1. Early adverse life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse (for example, child abuse, sexual assault, witnessing violence, etc.)
2. Experiences related to other ongoing (chronic) medical conditions such as cancer or diabetes.
3. Biological factors or chemical imbalances in the brain.
4. Use of alcohol or drugs.
5. Having feelings of loneliness and isolation.
How Can Your Mental Health be Improved??
1. Talk about your feelings - Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled.
2. Stay Active- Regular exercise can boost your self - esteem and can help you concentrate and sleep, and feel better. Exercise keeps brain and your other vital organs healthy and thus, it can easily improve your mental health.
3. Eat Well - Your brain needs a mix of nutrients in order to stay healthy and function well just like other organs in the body. A diet that is good for your physical health is also good for your mental health.
4. Drink sensibly- We often consume alcohol to change our mood, some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness but its effect is temporary. When the effect of the drink wears off, we feel worse because of the way the alcohol has affected your brain drinking is not a good way to mange your feelings.
5. Ask For Help- None of us are super humans we all sometimes get tired and overwhelmed by how we feel when things do not go as per planning. If the things worsen ask for help from your family members and friends maybe they can listen and help you.
6. Take a break- Taking a break is good it can be a five minutes break or a weekend break exploring something new a few minutes are enough to de -stress yourself always give yourself some time.
7. Accept who you are - We are all different, unique do not wish to be someone else feeling good about yourself boosts your self - confidence to learn new skills, visit new places and make new friends good self esteem helps in coping up with difficult times.
8. Write about your thoughts- Personally I feel it is the best to handle difficult circumstances maintain a diary or a journal and honestly write what you feel and the best way is that you can share it with your close ones if not then read your thoughts at the end of the day and analyze why you wrote that particular thought and keeping quoting "that I am confident and confidence is my mirror I grow where I am planted", and stop thinking about how others think about you "stick to your own silly rules".
So, let's pledge together to promote mental health and accept it and talk about it let's not judge people with mental illness rather we should help and we should not make fun of them.
