The International Day for the abolition of slavery is celebrated every year, it marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention for the suppression of the Traffic in persons.
This year the theme of the International Day for the 'Abolition of Slavery' is "Stories of Courage : Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism".
In terms of the modern day slavery, new forms of slavery have emerged with human trafficking, child labor and forced prostitution. According to UN this form of modern slavery occurs in almost every country and all ethnic, cultural and religious lines.
The international body states that more than half 52% of all forced labor can be found in upper - middle - income or high - income countries. The resolution of 317 (IV) of December 2, 1949 aims to abolish slavery such as trafficking, child labor, and the recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.
The UN Human Rights bodies have also highlighted the persistence of old forms of slavery that have been embedded in traditional beliefs and customs. These forms of slavery are the result of the long- standing discrimination against most vulnerable groups in societies, such as low - caste, indigenous people and the tribal minorities.
Globally, one in ten children work the majority of the child labor that occurs today is for economic exploitation that goes against the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognizes the right of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work.

Some political leaders also participate in this event by conveying their message to work together in eliminating any kind of slavery in modern society through newsletters, leaflets, flyers, posters and other published materials about abolition of slavery and the slave trade are dispensed across universities and other public areas.
The International Labor Organization puts the victims of modern slavery at 40 million worldwide, ILO has adopted a legally bunding protocol designed to strengthen global efforts to eliminate forced labor.
U.N. working group on Slavery submitted a report that tendered the date for consideration as the World Day for the Abolition of Slavery in the year 1985.
