Why is World Snake Day Celebrated ??
World Snake Day is celebrated in order to increase awareness among people about different species of snakes around the world . People always have negative thoughts about snakes but snakes are important creatures which contribute to the environment . There are around 3,5000 species of snakes around the world according to the Hindu Scriptures snakes were worshipped because Lord Shiva carried Vasuki Naag around his neck so the entire snake clan was worshipped . Naag Panchami is also an important festival with huge significance .
From 3,500 species only 600 are venomous and only 200 species of snake pose risk to human life . Snakes are effective predators and play a vital role in maintaining balance of nature's realms .
Unknown Facts About Snakes :
Fact 1- King Cobra is the world's longest snake and one and only species in the world which can lay eggs .
Fact2- Snakes do not have external ears their lower jaw helps them in tracking sound waves from either water or ground .
Fact3- Snakes can easily climb trees using their stomach scales .
Fact4- Venom used by snakes is a modified form of saliva they use poison for immobilization and digesting prey .
Snakes are found every where in every continent except Antarctica they can found in the sea , forests, deserts , prairies , . The number of snake species is declining due to deforestation and climate change which is a matter of concern due to these leading factors there is a steady decline in their prey and they are dying due to hunger .
Barbados is a thread snake and is the smallest residing species it is approximately 4 inches and heaviest snake which resides on this planet is Green Anaconda the Reticulated Python is the longest snake in the world .
In Kerala a temple is dedicated to snakes and they are worshipped there it is known as Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple in Haripad is an ancient and internationally known temple of pilgrimage for the devotees of serpent Gods . This temple has around 100,000 images of snakes along paths and among trees and is the largest temple in Kerala couples come to seek blessing at this temple . This temple is related to Parshu Ram who is believed as the creator of Kerala this history of Mannarasala has been widely mentioned in the 'Mandara Salodayam a Sanskrit poem written by Mannarasala M.G. Narayanan Namboothiri of the sacred family based on various legends handed down and also old scriptures and books available in the temple .
